Edit Photos, online.

Lose that habit of uploading bad pictures to Flickr. And not having Photoshop is not an excuse anymore.
Below are two fabulous online photo-editors.

Picnik.com is a cool service that allows anyone to edit photos online.
Fix underexposed photos, crop, rotate, remove red eyes, or apply effects to your photos. It has a flash interface and the smoothness is fabulous. It loads
real quick(even in Pilani).
You can upload picture from your computer or from an url. And after you are done with editing the photo, you can either download it or upload it directly to your flickr account. Pretty cool, heh?

I tried playing around with a wallpaper on picnik.com.

Before picnik.com

After picnik.com.

Hah! Actually just added a sepia effect and sharpened stuff a bit.

Not another photo editor.

Fauxto.com is an advanced image editing tool. It feels like a
desktop application and to create images you don't need to pay for expensive desktop image editors(read photoshop). It is the only online editing tool on which you can have layers and work on tabs inside your browser.

Basically its the free, online version of Photoshop. On fauxto, you have most of the frequently used features of Photoshop. If you frequently use photoshop, then Fauxto shouldn't be much of a problem, but for newbies its not the best editing tool.

Here's a screenshot below.

The faxuto blog lists the features of Fauxto and all that you can do on it.
  • Image Size
  • Canvas Size
  • Layer Adjustments:
    • Invert
    • Desaturate
    • Colorize
    • Hue/Saturation
    • Contrast/Brightness
  • Filters:
    • Sharpen
    • Blur
    • Find Edges
    • Emboss
    • Enrich
  • Fill/Clear Selection
  • Movable Marquees
So Fauxto is actually awesome to use for professionals, but for most of us who just need to get rid of the red-eye or crop the photo, Picnik.com is the best.

You decide for yourselves and tell me what you think.

Brian Terry of Bitnik, the company which made Picnik, mailed me about his experience with fauxto. below are his points.

"I just read your review of Fauxto and Picnik and I think it is a bit misleading about what Fauxto can be used for.

I tried using Fauxto and it doesn't really work. I would say Fauxto is more of a proof of concept than an acutal usable tool.

Here are things I noticed:
1. You can't open images from your PC or the web. Oops! How do you use it if you can't open images? I found that you can open images from the web cam (but they are very small). You point your web cam at an image and open it that way :P
2. The effects and layers are really cool, but get very slow quickly. This was with a tiny web-cam image. I can't imagine what they would do with a full size (5MP) image."

Um, gee, a comment from a competitor?
1. You CAN open images from the PC or web. Use "Open Web Image" and a window pops up with your options. I had no problem at all opening an image from my system. Don't know why you had a problem.
2. I also had no problem with speed on the effects - Especially since the gradients are real time.
I have to wonder if you were actually using Fauxto?
Picnik is a fun app (and a really good one) for those wanting quick, easy fixes - Fauxto is for folks who want higher end editing capabilities (layers, anti aliased text, saving layers - .fxo format, and more) - less about the social network and cute stuff and more about the picture. Not a problem, plenty of room for both.

Thanks, they are really cool services. Another site like this is PicJoke.com - funny pictures - they make a new effect every day!

Buying memory cards is such a big hassle... You have to Google prices, filter through which ones are genuine, around a bunch of stores, compare prices, finally buy your memory, and then fervently pray that the price doesn't drop in the next 2 weeks or so.

I've been done in by some ridiculous price drops in the past... especially this one time when I bought a Micro SD card for my DS flashcard at what I mistakenly assumed was a steal, only to later see that it had dropped by $5 in a week.
